Deep Dive Into My Studies

Why I study what I do...

I have two unique yet complementary academic interests: business and international studies. My initial interest in the world of finance and business began at a young age when I accidentally stumbled upon paper bonds that my grandmother had purchased when she first arrived in the United States. At 12, I had no idea what a bond was, but it sparked my curiosity and desire to learn as much as I possibly could. As a first-generation American, my Hispanic culture and my family’s journey to the U.S. have always been a deep source of inspiration for me. Growing up in a household where Spanish was spoken first and international affairs were constantly discussed, I quickly developed a love for understanding global politics. I knew that when I arrived on campus, I would seize every opportunity and dedicate myself and my studies to exploring the intersection between international affairs and business.

Leadership, A.I., and Corporate Culture
How generative A.I. is shaping ethical business leaders in the corporate environment both domestically and abroad

Project Overview

My first introduction to the world of ethical business leadership was with Dr. Ray’s Global Business Ethics Course, and it sparked not only a passion for ethics in business but also curiosity. Something that I quickly realized throughout the course content, was the way that technological advances and environmental contexts change the way we navigate and lead others through different ethical dilemmas that we face. This direct correlation is no coincidence. We are currently in an era of immense technological advancements due to the exponential growth of A.I. and all of its subsets such as Natural Language Processing (NLP), and Machine Learning (ML). While all of this innovation has the capacity to make huge strides in achieving high levels of efficiency for businesses it also has the potential to create many ethical dilemmas as its place within law and society is currently very vague. Making ethical leadership decisions in a context that is characterized by high levels of uncertainty, due to the nature of A.I., is not easy. Understanding how this new age of A.I. is transforming what we expect ethical leadership to be in a modern corporate environment is imperative to maximizing efficiency and effectiveness in the workplace. Even though A.I. is seeping into every single business across the globe we can’t expect leadership in the US. to respond the same way as leadership abroad. This is the second layer of my research proposal, where my dual degree of International Studies with a concentration in Europe comes into play. I think that my background in comparative international studies has the ability to provide a backdrop for an in-depth comparison and contrast of AI acceptance by different business cultures. A.I. is the future and if my research can help discover some of its implications on ethical business leadership and corporate culture both domestically and abroad, then together we will be able to foster corporate environments that not only prioritize modernization/innovation but also ethical leadership leaving us more prepared for the future.
